THE BBC DRAMA SERIES 'ADOLESCENCE' HAS OPENED A MASSIVE GREAT BIG CAN OF WORMS AND ONE THAT, IN MY OPINION, MASSIVELY NEEDS OPENING! MANY ARE LINKING IT TO THE WHOLE 'KNIFE CRIME' AGENDA AND OTHERS HAVE GOT ONTO THE BLACK vs WHITE DEBATE, ALL THOSE ISSUES ASIDE, THERE IS ONE MASSIVE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM HERE THAT SOME JUST WILL NOT SEE OR FACE...

There are MANY different ways of looking at this world and this reality and boy have we been bombarded with them all over these last few years hey!
There is one very UNDENIABLE FACT which is that since the onset of the so called ‘DIGITAL AGE‘ this whole place has changed and opened up in both good and not so good ways, like NEVER BEFORE, something which was always going to be the case once the ‘WORLD WIDE WEB‘ (and it’s called WEB for reasons!) was brought out, to us mere pawns, back in the early 90’s…
Being classed, at now nearly 60, as one of the ‘OLDER GENERATION‘ (yeah I’m still trying to get my head around that one lol, it’s every word of truth folks, time flies and it flies FAST!) I have the benefit of those many years, in that I CAN remember what life was like before this onset of ‘MODERN TECHNOLOGY‘, as all of my childhood was spent without it, in fact my family was always way behind with the so called ‘TECH ADVANCES‘, we were always the last on the block to get anything and most of my friends were envied at these times because they had LAND LINE TELEPHONES and VIDEO RECORDERS and wait for it, the excitement of good ole CEEFAX!!!

The reasons we did not have these things was not because my parents wanted to deny us access, it was simply the fact that only my Father ever worked after the children came along, as Mum was always there to look after us, and in fact back in 1966 when I was born she was actually FORCED to leave her job as it was not permitted for women with children to work at that time, at least where she worked anyway, at the DOCKS AND HARBOUR BOARD near the LIVER BUILDING in LIVERPOOL… so, they simply COULD NOT AFFORD these devices, so we never had them…
I will always remember the excitement of going around to my friend’s house, as a young teenager, in the early 80s and getting to watch movies on their VIDEO RECORDER, the first one that comes to my mind is THE ELEPHANT MAN and I remember thinking how utterly amazing it was to be able to watch a movie at any time you wanted and not have to rely on the programme schedule, ha, and I also can remember how exciting the CEEFAX system seemed at that time, also, whilst all my friends had the LAND LINE TELEPHONES in their houses, we were not able to afford one until my Dad had to be ‘ON CALL‘ at his place of employment and the company agreed to pay for the phone and I can’t tell you how exciting that moment was, to hear the old dial telephone ring for the first time!!! (unlike these times, we were very easily pleased in those days 😆)
So whilst I am deemed ‘OLD‘ at this moment in time, I don’t feel any different than I did 40 years ago, apart from learning much about how this reality works and trying to step away from it as much as I am able, and because I am still stuck in downtown, concrete, drug pushing suburbia, no matter how hard I strive to get back to nature and the basics, I see things around me every day, and witness close up how things have changed so much from when I was a child and a teenager.
Children have always been cheeky and some really take the proverbial but it’s gone beyond that these days, not with all of course, but where I am I see children AND adults completely addicted to their mobile devices, they cannot even walk down to the shops or around the park without them, I see adults in the park with their families and the whole lot of them are looking down at phones, I see people taking their dogs out for walks completely ignoring their pets and leaving their waste everywhere because they are completely distracted and have, it would appear, a total disrespect for others!
AND SO… I get back to the reason for this BLOG and if you CLICK ON THE BBC ARTICLE at the top of this, you will see their so called ‘INDEPTH‘ 😉 debate on the subject of whether young children under the age of 16 should be permitted the use of so called ‘SMART‘ mobile devices! As I have already said in countless places, my immediate question would be…
WHY IS THIS A DEBATE?????????

The very fact that this IS such speaks massive volumes to me!!!
It should be a TOTAL NO BRAINER issue, surely???
When I was a child we spent our days, when not stuck sitting in the indoctrination system (otherwise known as schools), outside as much as possible, playing in nature places, be it woods or old railway lines, and loving every moment of it, I used to sit in trees often looking down on the world, we had no contact with the outside reality of this world aside from the apparent ‘NEWS‘ and TV programmes and YES of course there was still school bullying but that was just a one-to-one thing without the never-ending threat of public and indeed worldwide added exposure and humiliation…
Children will be CHILDREN and so the exact point is highlighted, children are also completely unexperienced and naive (or at least they SHOULD be!) and the ultimate irony is that parents give the excuse of needing to hand their youngsters mobile devices because of safety concerns and wanting to remain in immediate touch with them (which they can of course do anyway without the whole so called ‘SMART‘ thing), BUT by giving them these things they OPEN THEM TO A WORLD OF UTTER DANGER! This coupled with all the SEX ED they now receive from VERY YOUNG AGES has resulted in HIGHLY SEXUALLY AWARE CHILDREN, I see the young girls around here walking around in their beyond SHORT SKIRTS showing what they had for their lunches every day and I cannot get my head around how any parent deems this a good thing??? Are they totally just giving into the system that is allowing this and not QUESTIONING it in any way???
One of the suggestions in the BBC DEBATE at the start of this BLOG is that the decision as to whether CHILDREN UNDER 16 should be allowed to use these phones (MINI COMPUTERS) should be left to the parents and that is good enough, I actually have to say that I don’t think that is good enough given that MANY ADULTS are also addicted to these things and so the premise would be that if ADULTS get addicted there is no hope for a CHILD!
ANYWAY… I don’t mean to attack anyone or make out that I’m superior at all, in any way, it’s just that the decision to me is BEYOND OBVIOUS…
CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 16 SHOULD NEVER BE ALLOWED TO HAVE A ‘SMART’ PHONE, it should be the same as it was in my day, you waited until adulthood and then used your own money to buy one for yourself and it is the responsibility of a parent to protect their children at all cost and giving them complete free access to these mobile computers is, in my view, far from protection…
AND…
Let’s stop all this SEXUALISATION of CHILDREN in PRIMARY schools
Please can we just let CHILDREN BE CHILDREN!!!
